character information
name: Kate Bishop
canon: Marvel Comics (616)
canon point: Hawkeye (2016) #14, after briefly seeing her mother
age: 23

(canon) background: character history & setting history

abilities: Kate is a baseline human, which means she has no special supernatural abilities which makes her easily vulnerable in any high level of attack against her. She's also generally accident prone on account of jumping recklessly into fights, which often results in a number of bandages on her person at almost any given time. Even so, she does have a fair amount of skills demonstrated in a fight:
ARCHERY: Kate's skills with a bow and arrow are quite advanced for her youth. She took up studying the weapon at a young age after witnessing Clint Barton's expertise in taking on a gang of mobsters with it. Later on, the World's Greatest Marksman himself took upon training Kate further. Kate is capable of shooting up to five arrows at once, and while she has before insisted on the impossibility of the "Robin Hood" shot (shooting an arrow straight through another arrow), she has been shown to pull off the feat herself.
👊 MARTIAL ARTS: Feeling helpless after a sexual assault experience, Kate immediately took up studying martial arts to provide herself with self-defense. This ranges from different techniques such as boxing and jiu jitsu, making her plenty experienced in a variety of forms of unarmed combat.
SWORDSMANSHIP: In addition to her martial arts lessons, Kate also took up fencing and the practice of swords, and proved to be very skilled at it, even surpassing her instructors.
🔍 PRIVATE INVESTIGATING: Kate's, uh, super great at detective work. No, really.

strengths:
RESOLVE: Kidnapped at a young age, Kate was rescued by the original Avengers, including Hawkeye, whom she noticed for his lack of powers and simple ability of shooting arrows, casting aside doubt that being ordinary could set boundaries when showcasing leadership. Years later, Kate is assaulted by a strange man one night on the street. Unable to defend herself, the incident temporarily consumes her with doubt and fear. But not accepting defeat, she furthers her training, taking lessons in boxing and archery while learning to be adaptable in combat, knowing that while there are things beyond her control, she can still fight back to protect herself and other people.

CARING: She received her innate caring nature from her mother, who traveled the world to further charitable causes, all while Kate's father worked in disreputable business deals and her sister lived in luxury. Kate chose to follow in her mother's stead, visiting soup kitchens and women's shelters. Later, as Hawkeye, Kate continues assisting the lesser-abled, wanting to inspire through action by setting the right example. At times, Kate has even been accused of becoming too concerned for others, stepping into situations beyond her capabilities, all to help the innocent.

ADAPTABLE: Kate understands life can throw unexpected turns in her direction and accepted needing to adapt to altering circumstances. Losing access to her family wealth, she tries to make the most of living on a tight budget. Not only does she ultimately seek independence from her father, but she also realizes what she hopes to achieve as a superhero can't be done while remaining in Clint's shadow as his partner. Growing from her youth and inexperience, she no longer relies on the corrupted wealth of her family and proves herself as a capable hero without being the second Hawkeye.

weaknesses:
PRIDEFUL: Whenever accused of being wrong, Kate will retort with a fit of frustration, facing this often with her ex-boyfriend, Eli, due to both being leaders within their team, with their disagreements resulting in Kate yelling or physically pushing him away to get her point across. A similar attitude is also present in her relationship with Clint, in which Kate doesn't hesitate to shout at him over his passiveness and ignores Clint's accusations of her own flaws. This all draws back from Kate's desire for a sense of control, stemming from wanting to escape the helplessness she felt when she was sexually assaulted.

HYPOCRISY: Kate can often be quite judgmental, attempting to make others feel guilty for their actions despite committing them herself. Clint is a common victim, with Kate criticizing his habit of running away from his problems, even though she's guilty of the same transgression in her past relationship with Eli. This dodging of relationships is repeated in her spontaneous romances with strangers, which she often judges Clint for. Additionally, despite shaming her family's financial privileges, Kate dresses in expensive clothing and, for a time, continues to rely on her father's credit card for her living expenses until she's forced into poverty.

OBLIVIOUS: Because of her privileged past, Kate is sometimes oblivious when interacting with others, keeping an optimistic belief that her presence is always welcomed and valued. This is because, despite the conflict in her personal relationships, Kate returns to that determination to fix as many problems as possible. While her move to L.A. is originally seen as an annoyance by both the locals and the city law enforcement, she actually solves several cases in a row, developing a more trusting relationship with the aforementioned when they realize that Kate's intentions are for good.
